1. This Gun for Hire directed by Frank Tuttle 1942
Loosely adapted from the great Graham Greene “entertainment” of the same name Philip Raven (Alan Ladd) is a gun for hire. He lives alone in a small room and gives milk to a lonely cat every morning. But he doesn’t seem to appreciate the company of humans. He never smiles and he won’t trust anybody. This role brought Alan Ladd fame and contributed to the beautiful Veronica Lake’s ongoing rise. This film plays in the background in LA Confidential where Kim Basinger plays a Veronica Lake look-a-like and Alan Ladd’s Raven definitely influenced Jeff in Melville’s La Samurai.
Quotes:
Willard Gates: Don’t you trust me? Philip Raven: Who trusts anybody?
Ellen Graham: Why don’t you go to the police? Philip Raven: I’m my own police.
Philip Raven: You are trying to make me go soft. Well, you can save it. I don’t go soft for anybody.
